Landmark Roman Villa

Commissioned by the Province of Limburg, artist Hans Lemmen designed a work of art that explains the archaeological value of the Roman cobblestone road and its surroundings. He does this by making the Roman past in Grootloon ‘visible’ to the general public in a very special and artistic way.

The benches, which consist of various seating elements, take the shape of a Roman villa with its gently sloping roofs and recessed gallery at the front. Much like the villas back then, the benches are scattered across the landscape with their facades facing south. The warm terracotta color refers to the hue of Roman roof tiles and bricks.

On the slanted side of the roof, there is a three-dimensional representation of a different villa from the surrounding area each time. The imprint shows the floor plan of a villa, the name of the location, and the distance in kilometers and paces to the bench.

ACCESSIBLE: only on foot or by bicycle. If you are coming by car after all, please park in the parking lot (Pb) on the Sint-Truidersteenweg between Grootloonstraat and Neremstraat and continue on foot. From the parking lot, follow the green walking route.
